Artist History
Hirafuku Suian (1844-1890) was a Japanese painter of the Meiji period. He was born in Kakunodate, Ugo Province (Akita Prefecture). He was the father of Hirafuku Hyakusui. He first learned painting from his father Bunrou, and then studied under Takemura Bunkai of the Maruyama-Shijo school. After the Meiji Restoration, he won many awards at various expositions, and painted many pictures of the Ainu. Terasaki Kogyo was one of his students.
