Artist History
Nakamura Gakuryo (1890-1969) was a Japanese painter. He was born in Shimoda, Shizuoka. From an early age, he studied under Nozawa Teiu of the Edo Rinpa school, and then Kawabe Mitate of the Tosa school, before entering the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He developed a unique world by incorporating the techniques of modern Western painting into traditional Yamato-e painting. He was a Person of Cultural Merit and a recipient of the Order of Culture.
