Artist History
Cho Gessho(1765-1832) was a literati painter in the late Edo period. He was born in Omi, in the family of a hanging scroll mounter in the area around Hikone Castle. He came to Kyoto and studied under Matsumura Gekkei. He was said to have been particularly close to Nagasawa Rosetsu. He lived in Nagoya, and was ordered by the feudal lord to paint folding screens and other works within the castle grounds.
