Artist History
Kano Hogai (1828-1888) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. He became an apprentice to Kano Shosen'in and was praised on a par with Hashimoto Gaho. After meeting Ernest Francisco Fenollosa, he sought new possibilities in Japanese painting by incorporating realistic techniques and chiaroscuro from Western painting. He also worked hard to establish the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. His final work, "Sad Mother Kannon," is a masterpiece of modern Japanese painting.
