This is a heartwarming piece of work depicting a turtle swimming leisurely and playing, and other turtles that appear to be a parent and child watching over it. The box is inscribed by Kawabata Shigeaki, a Meiji-era Japanese painter and the son of Kawabata Gyokusho.

Artist History
Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) was a Japanese painter from the mid-Edo period. The founder of the Maruyama school. He learned painting methods of the Kano school from Ishida Yutei and distinguished himself as a painter. He is also known for placing the utmost importance on sketching. He taught many of his disciples, including the major painters called "the Ten Excellent Painters of the Okyo School".
