Artist History
Kato Bunrei (1706-1782) was a shogunate official and artist in the mid-Edo period. He was born in Ozu, Iyo Province. He was the sixth son of Kato Yasutsune, the third lord of the Iyo-Ozu Domain, and was adopted by Kato Yasushige, a samurai retainer of the same clan, and lived in Edo. He learned painting from Kano Chikanobu of the Kobiki-cho Kano school, and became the teacher of Tani Buncho in his youth, passing on the Kano school.
