Artist History
Kawabata Gyokusho (1842-1913) was a Japanese painter from the Meiji to Taisho periods. He was born in Kyoto. He studied under Nakajima Raisho of the Maruyama school. He also studied Western painting under Wirgman and Takahashi Yuichi in Edo. He later became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he taught Maruyama school painting techniques. He later founded the Kawabata Art School.
