Artist History
Kono Bairei (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He was born in Kyoto. He first studied the Maruyama school under Nakajima Raisho, and later the Shijo school under Shiokawa Bunrin. He participated in the founding of the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School. He opened the Bairei School and devoted himself to teaching the next generation of artists. His students included Takeuchi Seiho and Kawai Gyokudo.
