The dragon pushes through the dark rainclouds and climbs vigorously towards the light. The colors are so deep that it is hard to believe they were painted using only ink, and the splashes of water scattered throughout the painting give the picture a sense of dynamism.

Artist History
Kobayakawa Shusei (1885-1974) was a Japanese painter from the Meiji to Showa periods. He was born in Hyogo Prefecture. After dropping out of Kyoto Municipal Painting College, he studied under Taniguchi Kokyo and later Yamamoto Shunkyo, and joined the Sanae-kai. During the war, he painted wartime records as a war artist, but after the war he worked on religious paintings.
