At first glance, it looks like a landscape painting, but there is a small tiger depicted. Based on the Chinese legend "Zhou Chu Eliminates Three Evils", this painting depicts the scene of Zhou Chu killing the white-fronted tiger of Nanzan Mountain.

Artist History
Ganku (1749/1756?-1838) was a painter from the late Edo period. The founder of the Kishi school. He studied and combined many styles of painting, including the Kano, Shen Nanpin, and Maruyama schools. He created wall paintings for the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kanazawa Castle, and received many requests from feudal lords around the country. He was particularly skilled at painting tigers.
