Artist History
Honnyo (1778-1826) was a Jodo Shinshu priest of the late Edo period. He was the 19th generation of Nishi Hongwanji Temple. He was the second son of the 18th Bunnyo. He restored the Mikageido Hall and conducted the Buddhist memorial service for the 550th anniversary of the death of Shinran Shonin. He also studied painting under Yoshimura Kokei and tea ceremony under Yabuuchi-ke 7th generation Keiinsai, and excelled in poetry and ceramics.
