Artist History
Munakata Shiko (1903-1975) was a printmaker from the Taisho to Showa periods. He was born in Aomori Prefecture. He taught himself Western-style painting, moved to Tokyo and was selected for the Teiten. He was inspired by the work of Kawakami Sumio and decided to pursue woodblock printing. His interactions with members of the Mingei, including Yanagi Muneyoshi, Kawai Kanjiro, and Hamada Shoji, marked a turning point for him, and he produced many masterpieces with religious themes. He won awards and received high praise at numerous international exhibitions.
