Artist History
Ike Taiga (1723-1776) was a Japanese literati painter from the mid-Edo period. While he studied under Yanagisawa Kien and Gion Nankai, he also taught himself Chinese Nán zōng huà painting. He established a unique style of painting, and is said to have perfected Japanese Nanga painting along with Yosa Buson. His wife, Gyokuran, was also known as a painter.
