Artist History
Kikuchi Yosai (1788-1878) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He was born in Edo. He studied the Kano and Tosa schools of painting, as well as Japanese, Chinese and Western painting techniques and court customs. He excelled in historical paintings, and studied famous calligraphy and paintings, treasures and other things. He compiled the results of his research in the collection of portraits of loyal subjects and filial sons, "Zenken Kojitsu.(前賢故実)"
