Artist History
Kawanabe Kyosai(1831-1889) was a Japanese painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He was born in Shimousa. He studied ukiyo-e under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and later the Kano school under Kano Dohaku, incorporating various styles of painting to establish his own unique style. He painted a wide variety of genres, from Buddhist paintings to caricatures.
