Artist History
Otani Son'yu (1886-1939) was a Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect priest and politician from the Meiji to early Showa periods. He was born in Kyoto. He was the fourth son of the 21st abbot of Nishi Honganji, Koson, and the younger brother of the 22nd abbot, Kozui. His younger sister was the poet Kujo Takeko. He later became a member of the House of Peers. He was also skilled in calligraphy, painting, and the tea ceremony.
