This is a painting of a monkey that Okyo painted when he was 49 years old. Okyo's monkeys are somewhat plain, and while he places emphasis on depicting the facial expressions and forms, one of his charms lies in the way he glimpses his perspective, as if he is carefully determining the lines that give the monkey its distinctive appearance.Accompanying the painting is a caption by Kawabata Gyokusho, a Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods who taught the Maruyama school of painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.

片山楊谷 雲中東邦朔白鹿図
