Artist History
Arai Kanpo (1878-1945) was a Japanese painter. He was born in Tochigi Prefecture and studied historical painting under Mizuno Toshikata. He was known as one of the four great disciples of Mizuno Toshikata, and was active first in the Bunten exhibition and later in the Inten exhibition. In 1916, he traveled to India and copied murals from various places, earning him the nickname "Kanpo of Buddhist painting."
