Matsumura Keibun / Peach blossoms and a small bird


The plump-looking Eurasian bullfinch is attractive. It appears that they love flower buds, and will even pluck off buds that are just starting to open.
This work was exhibited at the “Edo-Painting Drawing Class” held at the Fuchu Art Museum in 2023.

Matsumura Keibun / 12 Hanging scrolls of flowers and birds


It depicts camellia, Japanese bush warbler on plum blossoms, weeping cherry blossoms with azure-winged magpie, rape blossoms with butterflies, reeds with jade, moon with Japanese silver grass, chrysanthemum, maple, and geese, etc., representing the twelve months. The mounting was done by Fushihara-Shunpodo, a Kyoto-based mounting store.

It is a vivid depiction of a horse galloping happily. Lord Fumai, a feudal lord and tea master, was skilled in calligraphy, painting, waka poetry, and pottery.

Maruyama Okyo / Turtles playing under the rising sun


A mother and her baby turtles playing leisurely together. The Japanese pond turtle is now designated as an endangered species, but it seems that in the Edo period it was kept as a pet. In the past, it may have been possible to see many of them in nearby rivers.

Maruyama Okyo / Plovers with a wintry moon


This is a masterpiece that depicts a half moon floating brilliantly in the bitterly cold sky and plovers, a familiar winter seasonal word in haiku, using only ink. It has a box with the inscription by Mori Ippo who was a Mori school painter from the late Edo period. Formerly owned by the Setsuda family, a sake wholesaler that has been in business since the Edo period.

Maruyama Okyo / Playing turtle


This is a heartwarming piece of work depicting a turtle swimming leisurely and playing, and other turtles that appear to be parent and child watching over it. The box is inscribed by Kawabata Shigeaki, a Meiji-era Japanese painter and the son of Kawabata Gyokusho.
