Artist History
A literati painter from the late Edo period, born in Nagoya. He was the eldest son of the sculptor Yamamoto Yuemon. His given name was Chikasada, and his courtesy name was Meikyo. He used several art names including Bueki, Shun'en, Gyokuzen, Bekka, and Tendo Gaishi. From a young age, he had a fondness for painting, and his talent was recognized early on. He received patronage from the wealthy merchant Kagaya Tenyu, a supporter of the Owari painting school. Under Tenyu's patronage, he met Nakabayashi Chikudo and together they moved to Kyoto, where they studied by copying many famous paintings. He had friendships with Rai San'yo, Kainan Unno, and excelled in poetry, tea ceremony, and art authentication. In his later years, he became an official painter for the Owari domain. He passed away in 1856 at the age of 74.
