Ganku / Tiger
At the time, tigers were generally depicted from the imagination, but it is said that Ganku obtained a tiger skull from a Chinese merchant and covered it with tiger skin before sketching.
Matsudaira Fumai / Horse
It is a vivid depiction of a horse galloping happily. Lord Fumai, a feudal lord and tea master, was skilled in calligraphy, painting, waka poetry, and pottery.
Mori Sosen / Monkey playing with bamboo
Among Sosen's monkeys, this one is drawn with a dynamic energy, almost like a sketch. His keen insight into the monkey's quick movements is truly impressive.
Matsumura Keibun / Two birds flying over the waves
His skill to express waves with just a single brush stroke of ink is truly outstanding. Two plovers flying around under the moonlight. The depiction of the quiet waves invites a sense of tranquility, so quiet that you can almost hear the sound of their wings.
Garden landscapes of Spring and Autumn, A pair of six-panel folding screens painted in Mid-Edo period
Although the artist is unknown, these are the excellent Edo-period animal painting screens. The balance between the heavy background and the intricately drawn birds is beautiful and mysteriously charming.
Kishi Chikudou / Jicchosei / large hanging scroll
The Ten Longevity (Jicchosei) refers to the ten symbols of eternal youth and longevity: the sun, water, pine, crane, turtle, deer, and the herb of immortality, plus three of the following: mountain, cloud, moon, stone, and bamboo.
Nagasawa Rosetsu / Purple wisteria flowers and two sparrows
Wisteria is drawn with flowing lines. Two sparrows are staying underneath. Rosetsu's unique and attractive brushworks make this work very impressive.
Hara Zaichu / Billows
It is a painting of raging waves depicting the rough surface of water almost overflowing from the screen, but as you look at it, a sense of calm gradually comes over your mind.
Painted by Yamaguchi Soken,inscription by Kagawa Kageki / Sparrow and bamboo
The painting was done by Yamaguchi Soken, one of the Ten Excellent Painters of the Okyo School, and the inscription was written by Kagawa Kageki, a poet from the late Edo period. A sparrow is perched on a thin bamboo stalk, looking as dignified as a samurai.
Okamoto Shuki / Peacock and Pine
Shuki was so excelled at painting peacocks that his peacock paintings were called "Shuki's Peacock" with praise. With detailed depictions, every single feather is carefully drawn.
Ganku / 2 hanging scrolls of tiger and waterfall
Ganku was so skilled at painting tigers that his tiger paintings were called "Ganku's Tiger" with praise. The fierce, sharp gaze and the majestic appearance... the depiction is so powerful that you can almost hear the roar.
Kano Tatsunobu / Falling cherry blossoms
This is a shikishi-sized piece depicting cherry blossoms falling. The fragile and neat appearance is wonderful.
Furusawa Setsuden / Summer flowers, grass and insects
Many small insects are vividly depicted among the colorful plants. Furusawa Setsuden was a student of Taki Katei, and like his teacher, he specializes in painting flowers-and-birds.
Ishiko Yurin / 2 hanging scrolls of fruits and mice
The painting shows adorable and humorous depictions of food-hungry mice. Ishiko Yurin was active in the Nagoya art world.
Late Edo and Meiji periods / Shunga of fox spirits
This erotic painting from the late Edo period and the Meiji era is a humorous depiction of a man who, while half asleep, is completely deceived by some fox spirits.
Sakakibara Shiho / Two sparrows
Two sparrows are enjoying a meal under gorgeously blooming plum trees. This work evokes the coming of spring.
Yamaguchi Soken / Cormorant fishing
The smooth brushstrokes vividly and beautifully depict the scene of cormorant fishing. This work was painted by Yamaguchi Soken, one of the Ten Excellent Painters of the Okyo School.
Mori Sosen / Tiger in the snow
The tiger is drawn with ink, but it is full of realism and conveys a lively appearance. There is an inscription on the box by Japanese painter Kawamura Manshu.
Yoshimura Kokei / 3 Hanging scrolls of Hawk, Spider and Bear
This triptych was created by Yoshimura Kokei, one of the Ten Excellent Painters of the Okyo School. The unusual combination of a bear, a hawk, and a spider, as well as the dignified atmosphere of this work make it an appealing piece.
Komai Genki / Two rabbits
This rabbit painting was done by Komai Genki, a disciple of Maruyama Okyo. It captures the characteristics of a rabbit in a simple way.
