Artist History
Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888) was a swordsman and politician from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He was born in Edo. He became a disciple of Chiba Shusaku and later founded the Muto-ryu school. He also studied spearmanship under Yamaoka Seizan and married his sister. He inherited the Yamaoka family business. He is one of the three great swordsmen of the end of the Edo period.
